BrainVoyager QX v2.8

BrainVoyager Installation

To install BrainVoyager QX, use the installation wizard for the respective platform. Note that a license (HASP USB key or network license manager) allows you to install and use BrainVoyager QX on Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. Note that BrainVoyager QX works only in combination with the HASP licensing system, i.e. you need either a HASP dongle for a single user license or a HASP floating network license. Make sure that you have installed the latest HASP drivers to avoid licensing problems. On Windows, BrainVoyager QX is also available with a software licensing scheme (trial version).

Windows

To install BrainVoyager QX on Windows XP or newer (Windows 8 recommended), follow these installation instructions:

  1. Important: Uninstall any previous version of BrainVoyager QX before running the new installation program. Otherwise Windows might launch the old installer instead of the new one and the new program will not be installed properly. To uninstall, close any running instance of BrainVoyager QX. Launch the Windows "Control Panel" and then click on "Uninstall Programs". Select "BrainVoyager QX" in the appearing list of installed programs and then click the "Remove" button on the right side. This will start the BrainVoyager QX Uninstaller which removes the old program version from your hard disk. None of your own data files will be affected by this operation. The uninstallation process will not uninstall the HASP driver, so you do not need to reinstall it when running the new installer.
  2. Web installation. If you downloaded the "setup_bvqx_v[n1][n2][n3]_Win[32|64].exe" from the BrainVoyager web site, double click the respective setup file name and follow the instructions of the appearing Installation Wizard (the three "n" symbols are placeholders for the actual program version number).
  3. CD installation. Insert the CD labeled "BrainVoyager QX" into your CD-ROM or DVD drive. If Windows' "Auto-Run" feature is enabled on your system, the installation starts automatically and you can skip step 4.
  4. From the "Start" menu, select "Run". Type "D:\setup" (substitute the appropriate letter of your CD-ROM drive for D). Alternatively, browse in Windows Explorer to the DVD/CD-ROM drive and double click on "setup.exe".
  5. Follow the instructions of the appearing Installation Wizard.

By default, BrainVoyager QX is installed in "C:\Program Files\BrainVoyager" (64-bit version) or in "C:\Program Files\BrainVoyager32" (32-bit version). Example scripts and plugins are installed in the subfolders "Scripts" and "Plugins" in the "My Documents" (Windows XP) or "Documents" (Windows 7) directory. If you use Windows in another language than English, the localized name of the "(My )Documents" folder is correctly identified. Once installation is complete, you will see a BrainVoyager QX icon on your desktop and in the "Start -> All Programs" menu. To start the program, (double) click the BrainVoyager icon.

Mac OS X

To install BrainVoyager QX on Mac OS X 10.6 or newer (Mac OS X 10.8 recommended), follow these installation instructions:

  1. In case you have an older version of BrainVoyager QX, close any running instance prior to installation. We recommend to deinstall the older version of BrainVoyager QX by moving the "BrainVoyager" (or "BrainVoyager32") folder located in the "/Applications" folder to the Trash. This step will not uninstall the HASP driver, so it is not strictly necessary to reinstall it when running the new installer. In order to ensure that you use the latest HASP driver, reinstallation of the driver is, however, recommended. The installer can be used on Mac OS 10.5 and higher.
  2. Apple recommends that programs are installed in the "/Applications" folder requiring administrative privileges. These privileges are also necessary to install the device driver in case you use a local HASP USB dongle (the device driver is not required when using a floating network HASP license). To obtain administrator privileges, the Installation Wizard asks for the user name and password of an administrator account. The user account you created when you set up Mac OS X is an administrator account. If you are currently logged in as this user or as another user with administrative rights, simply re-enter the same user name and password that you have used during the standard log in procedure.
  3. Web installation. If you have downloaded the "BrainVoyagerQXInstaller_v[n1][n2][n3]_Mac64.dmg" file from the BrainVoyager web site, the contained installation program will most likely be extracted automatically on your system. If not, simply double click the DMG file. To start the Installation Wizard (if not started automatically), double click the extracted binary file ("BrainVoyagerQXInstaller_v[n1][n2][n3]_Mac64.pkg") in the mounted folder in the Finder. If "Gatekeeper" prevents running the package, right-click the package icon and click "Open" in the context menu followed by a click on "Open" in another Gatekeeper dialog. After launching the program, follow the instructions of the appearing Installation Wizard. Note that the three numbers in the installer file names above are placeholders for the actual program version number.
  4. CD installation. Insert the CD labeled "BrainVoyager QX" into your CD-ROM or DVD drive. Launch the Installation Wizard by double-clicking its icon or file name in the Finder and follow the appearing instructions (see also "Web installation").

By default, BrainVoyager QX is installed in "/Applications/BrainVoyager" (64-bit version) or "/Applications/BrainVoyager32" (32-bit version). A program icon is placed in the Dock that you can use to launch the program. Example scripts and plugins are installed in the subfolders "Scripts" and "Plugins" of the users "Documents" folder (i.e. "/Users/[user_name]/Documents").

Linux

To install BrainVoyager QX on Linux, follow these installation instructions:

  1. In case you have an older version of BrainVoyager QX, close any running instance prior to installation. We highly recommend to deinstall the older version of BrainVoyager QX by running the "Uninstaller", which is located in the "BrainVoyager" folder. The uninstallation process will not uninstall the HASP driver, so it is not strictly necessary to reinstall it when running the new installer. In order to ensure that you use the latest HASP driver, reinstallation of the driver is, however, recommended. The installer can be used on 2.4.x and 2.6.x Linux kernels. Make sure that you use a distribution, indicated by the "[distro]" string most closely matching your Linux version. You do not need to have exactly the same version as indicated by the distribution.
  2. It is recommended to install the program in the user's home folder so that the program can personalize the installation by installing an icon on the user's desktop and in order to install scripts and plugins in the user's "Documents" folder. This allows a user with standard privileges to modify scripts and plugins. Use administrator ("root") privileges to install the local HASP device driver in case you use a local license (dongle). Installation of the device driver is not required when using a floating network HASP license.
  3. Web installation. If you have downloaded the "install_bvqx_v[n1][n2][n3]_[distro].bin" file from the BrainVoyager web site, enter

    # sh ./install_bvqx_v[n1][n2][n3]_[distro].bin

in a terminal window to start the Installation Wizard. You must, of course, switch to the directory containing the program using the "cd" command. After launching the program, follow the instructions of the appearing Installation Wizard.
  4. CD installation. Insert the CD labeled "BrainVoyager QX" into your CD-ROM or DVD drive. After mounting the disk, "cd" to it and either directly launch the installer or copy it first to your hard disk (recommended). Then proceed as described in the "Web installation" section.

By default, BrainVoyager QX is installed in the users home directory "/home/[user_name]/BrainVoyager" (64-bit version) or "/home/[user_name]/BrainVoyager32" (32-bit version). An icon is placed on the desktop if KDE or GNOME distributions are used. You may start the program from a terminal or by using its icon on the desktop. Example scripts and plugins are installed in the subfolders "Scripts" and "Plugins" of the users "Documents" folder (i.e. "/home/[user_name]/Documents").
